Here are some of the recent ground exercises we’ve been doing with Mr P. At the moment we alternate between riding and ground work, to work on loading the tendon but also on developing overall muscle and posture in different ways. In this video we’ve combined long lining and lunging with using limb weights, alternating between the front and hind limbs. Here’s our most recent farrier consult with Erin Stevens. Take a look to see where we are at with his feet and Erin’s reasoning behind his treatment plan. Erin has been an absolute integral part of Mr P’s team and we honestly believe that his ongoing improvements in soundness are in large part due to Erin’s careful consideration of his hoof management. Erin takes his time with each and every consult, with his ultimate aim and concern being horse soundness and welfare. What do we look at in relation to a horse’s bars, what do we mean when we talk about a horse’s ‘smile’ and is the standard ‘2 crinkle rule’ the only one we should follow when fitting our horse’s bit? Learn about all of this in part 2 of our bit fitting consultation with Amanda from Bit Bank Australia The final part of our bit fitting consultation with Amanda from Bit Bank Australia. Have a look at the different bits we tried with Mr P, why Amanda selected these bits and how Mr P went under saddle in each bit. We were super impressed at the difference the final bit we selected made, and P has continued to get better with each training session since! Very grateful to Amanda for helping us and for coming onboard Mr P’s team! This was our best result so far! You can see how even the graphs look, which is what we are aiming for.
We know from the literature that a difference of greater than 5mm measured at the poll and wither and 8mm at the sacrum (pelvis) is clinically significant as a lameness. At this assessment Mr P measured within “normal” limits for all measurements except for the propulsion phase at the wither (10R MaxD). MinD is the height of the sensors when the foot is in contact with the ground. MaxD is the height of the sensors when the foot is in mid-swing. UpD is the difference between these two measures. (To keep it simple just focus for now on the MinD and MaxD in relation to “normal” limits). We’re pretty happy with this progress! This was measured on a hard surface, we’ll do on a soft surface next to compare the difference Our transition to ridden work has been a little longer than we hoped, but we are well on our way and will be sharing that part of Mr P’s journey very soon! We recently had a bit fitting consultation with Amanda Arnold from Bit Bank Australia Most of us now consider the importance of saddle fit, but bit fit is something that typically doesn’t get the same attention. In our opinion it really should! Amanda was a wealth of information and the difference we noticed between the different bits we tried was quite remarkable. Here’s part 1 of our consultation with Amanda, where we discuss why you should your bit fitted to your horse and how to measure bit size.
