equine physiotherapy

The horse is an elite athlete, and as such is prone to musculoskeletal injuries in much the same way human athletes are.
The principles of equine physiotherapy and rehabilitation are no different to the principles we apply to our human patients - to address movement dysfunction, muscle imbalances, gait abnormalities, restricted range of motion and adaptive changes in soft tissues and joints.

To complete a post-graduate course in equine physiotherapy, you must first be a qualified human physiotherapist. Physiotherapists work closely with your vet, farrier, dentist and other healthcare professionals, ensuring a full team approach in addressing your horse's injury or dysfunction. At Equimotion we have well established relationships with many vets throughout Sydney and the Central Coast.

Our physiotherapists are highly qualified in the field of equine physiotherapy and rehabilitation, and have worked and trained with some of the leading experts in the field. Both Emma and Kristin currently work with horses across a wide range of disciplines, including racing and elite performance horses. Emma has worked with the Australian Equestrian Team, providing physiotherapy to both horses and riders at the 2014 World Equestrian Games and 2016 Rio Olympics.

We use a range of assessment and treatment techniques, including high-speed video analysis, inertial motion units in gait analysis, exercise prescription, manual therapy, taping and neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

what to expect in a  consultation

  • Qualified professionals. Our physiotherapists are university trained, first in people before undertaking further post-graduate training to specialise in horses. This allows us to not only apply our extensive knowledge and experience in working with people to our horse clients, but also places us in the unique position of being able to treat both horse and rider.
  • Evidence Based Treatment. We regularly attend courses and lectures to keep up to date with the latest research and only apply the most effective treatment to you and your horse.
  • Team Approach.  We know that working as part of a team is imperative to getting the best results. This will include consulting with your vet, farrier, saddle fitter, coach and any other professionals working with you and your horse.
  • Comprehensive Assessment. It’s important to assess how your horse moves and a thorough gait and movement assessment will be incorporated into each session. This will involve watching your horse move in hand and on a circle and may also include a ridden assessment. Our assessment is purely to assess your horse's movement and performance. We do not diagnose any injury or lameness in your horse, this can only be done by your veterinarian. We will always work closely with your referring vet in determining the most appropriate treatment plan for your horse.
  • Education & Results. The most important person in your horse's team is you. We will explain our findings and treatment plan with you, with the focus of treatment to provide you with the tools and knowledge to be involved in the management of your horse's condition. You as the owner / rider play an important role in the ongoing rehabilitation of the horse.
  • Rehabilitation Program. Every horse we see will be prescribed a home exercise program. Current research consistently shows that exercise should be one of the main treatment options for most, if not all musculoskeletal problems. The rehab plan will be tailored to your horse's needs and your involvement with their rehab will not only yield the best results but will save you money in the long term.
